“This project is about creating a blinking LED using the IC 4017. By utilizing the CD4017, a counter IC, we have constructed an 8-LED blinker. This will help us better understand the functionality of the CD4017 counter IC.

The operation of the blinking LED project is as follows: The IC 555 is an oscillator, and we connected its output to the input of the CD4017 IC. The IC 4017 has 10 outputs, of which we connected 8 outputs to LEDs. The functionality of the counter IC works in the following way: With each pulse applied to its input, the outputs change their status sequentially from logic 0 to logic 1. To provide an example, if we apply a single pulse to the IC’s input, Output 1 becomes active. If we apply two pulses, Output 1 becomes active and then inactive, and Output 2 becomes active. This pattern continues, with the outputs activating and deactivating in sequence for each pulse we apply.

How to use the blinking LED project with IC 4017

Once you have completed building the project, simply provide the input voltage to it, which is 12 volts. Using the potentiometer present on the project, you can decrease or increase the blinking speed of the LEDs. In essence, with this potentiometer, we control the output of the IC 555, which generates the pulses.
